Originally from Hickory, NC, where she began her dance training at the age of three, Kate Shugar graduated from the Honors Program at Columbia College, where she pursued the Bachelor of Arts in Dance Studies and certified in Performance and Choreography, as well as in Research and Writing. An active member of the Columbia College Dance Company, Kate served as President on its Board of Directors. In addition, she held the position of Vice-President for the college’s chapter of NDEO. Kate’s choreography has been featured in Columbia College student choreography productions and she was selected to perform in faculty and student submissions for ACDFA’s Southeast Regional Festival in March 2012 and 2013. She has worked with numerous artists such as Anna Halprin, Vincent Thomas, Vanessa Voskuil, Paloma McGregor, and Chase Angier through workshops and residencies, as well as many others at the 2012 ADF Winter Intensive and the ADF Six Week School in the summer of 2013. Kate has also had the privilege of presenting at conferences on both the regional and national level such as the National Dance Education Organization, the American Association of Colleges & Universities, and the National Collegiate Honors Council. She now lives in Los Angeles, CA where she seeks performance opportunities that allow for ample improvisation, collaboration, and the chance to discover the community through art. Young Choreographer’s Project is the perfect avenue through which to instill the values of creativity and artistic expression in the next generation!
